Franklin County Visitors Bureau Announces Destination Arts Activity – June 4-7

Destination Arts in downtown Waynesboro exhibits more than 800 pieces of art.

“Destination ARTS!” activities continue in Waynesboro with special events and live music scheduled at Gallery 50, Gallery 20 East, and 42 West ARTS Co-Op. The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro and The Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery will also have art and pottery for sale and art classes available.

Marjorie Tressler Gallery 50′s curator and gallery director continues her series of demonstrations and talks on the old masters style of painting Thursday, June 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. She will be explaining her style in portraiture. Gallery 50 will soon be two years old and in conjunction with this she is featuring in the West Window “Celebrate Gallery 50″ and in the East Window “Spring into Summer”.

“Wine Down Friday” receptions, featuring live music, wine and light refreshments, are scheduled from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 29 at four of the galleries.

The father and daughter team of Andrew and Nicola Sussman will be providing the music at Gallery 50 on Friday, June 5 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The popular duo has performed in the downtown district on a number of occasions since the beginning of Waynesboro’s “Destination ARTS!” Nicola will play her ukulele and sing standards and folk songs while Andrew accompanies her on keyboard and harmonica.

The artists at 42 West Arts Co-Op show titled “Cats” from continues through August. The show has “Cats” in various art forms. Patric Schlee will set up his array of instruments and play flute, drums and guitar at the 42 West ARTS Co-Op on Friday, June 5 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Ed Beard will be demonstrating wood burning feathers and eagles on Saturday, June 6 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the 42 West Arts Co-Op. Ed is an educator/artist and has been a woodworker for 50 years. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman – Cumberland Valley Chapter, the Lincoln Highway Heritage group and a member of Woodsmith’s advisory board.

Donna Bingaman will be demonstrating portrait and still life oil painting on Saturday, June 6 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at 42 West Arts Co-Op. Donna, a native of Waynesboro, specializes in in painting oil portraits, still lifes and sculptures. Donna is a graduate of the Washington School of Art and has studied with several regionally and nationally known portrait and oil painting artists. She enjoys painting people from life or photos and strives to capture the unique personality of each.

The week’s activities include a reception at Gallery 20 East on Friday, June 5 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. to celebrate the opening of “Vivid Abstractions” – Paintings and Mixed Media. The show features the works of Linda Slattery Sherman and Marian Griffin. Light refreshments will be served. The show will run through July 28 and has a number of vibrant paintings in a variety of sizes.

The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro at 13 South Church Street is a guild of artists working in clay. The Center hosts pottery classes and workshops including an introduction to Pottery Class, a Teen Wheel Throwing Class, a monthly Children’s Class, and 2 hour Corks and Clay Workshops specializing in creating hand built projects. The Ceramic Arts Center brings together area potters of all skill levels and ages with classes, pottery sales, and 24/7 member access.

Dean Brocious is at Schier’s Furniture LIfestyles, 37 W. Main St., Saturday, June 6 from 2:30 – 5 pm. A Chambersburg based singer-songwriter, Dean performs a wide mix of original music and tasteful cover songs by artists such as John Prine, Neil Young, Tom Petty, The Decemberists, Elliot Smith, and many more. Champagne and Zoe’s chocolate will be served. Sponsored by Schier’s.

Drew Adams will be at Gallery 20 East on Sunday, June 7, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. A founding member of the band, Good for Nothing (later Dimestore Profit), Adams has since gone on to play shows throughout the region as a member of the Drew Adams Project and On Tap. This weekend, he’ll be at the microphone from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

A show of photography work by Ryan Haylett continues through June 30 at The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery. A reception to meet the artist will be held on Saturday, June 20. The school is located at 10 East Main Street.

A Songwriters Forum will be held Monday June 8 in Gallery 20 East from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. All aspiring songwriters welcome! Participants are asked to write a song, lyrics, or instrumental piece to share, with the following title: “More than Maybe”. All genres and levels of experience are welcome to attend. There will be opportunities to share and discuss your arrangement with the group.

Musical performances at Destination ARTS! are supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Destination ARTS! currently features Gallery 50 (50 West Main Street), 42 West ARTS (42 West Main Street), Gallery 20 East (20 East Main Street), The Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery (10 East Main Street) and The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro (13 South Church Street).

The galleries feature oil paintings, watercolors, pottery, sculptures, photographs, furniture and more. This weekend, they will be open on Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. (Gallery 50 and 42 West Co-Op only), Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
