Vienna, VA. (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts is proud to recognize five outstanding high school performing arts teachers, each of whom have received $ 2500 Grants as part of the organization’s annual Wolf Trap Grants for High School Performing Arts Teachers, designed to stimulate curriculum and enrich classroom learning. These Grants honor the exceptional instruction and performance achievements of public high school teachers within music, dance, and theatre disciplines throughout Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun Counties in Virginia; Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland; and the District of Columbia. Wolf Trap has awarded 2011-2012 Grants to Charles Orifici of Clarksburg High School, Marilyn Gilligan of Briar Woods High School, Claire Rowan of James Madison High School, Michael A. Fitzhugh of Bladensburg High School and Chris Gillespie of Wakefield High School. Through these funds, each teacher has made a resounding impact on their students and their curriculum with the creation of new works and initiatives that range from a student written/composed/directed musical to a study of the historical music related to the Battle of Bladensburg.

“Wolf Trap is extremely excited and honored to award these five educators well-deserved Grants to help enrich their already strong performing arts curriculums,” says Akua Kouyate, Wolf Trap’s Senior Director, Education. “These important Grants are strategically tied to Wolf Trap’s mission of strengthening performing arts curriculum within classrooms, and we know that each teacher’s individual use of funds and vision for the future will have a strong ripple effect. As a result of the Grants, teachers expressed that they have expanded their own approaches in ways that deepen arts learning while providing substantive arts experiences for their students, not only for those who participated in projects this year, but also for students they will instruct in the future. ”

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Charles Orifici

Clarksburg High School

Inspired by their nomination to perform at the National Cherry Blossom Festival 100th Anniversary in Washington D.C., the Clarksburg High School Band commissioned an original instrumental piece that captures and celebrates Japanese musical styles and traditions. Composer Frank Mahoney, retired Director of Instrumental Music at Southern Delaware School of the Arts, led Clarksburg High School Band, Orchestra, and Music Theory students in a series of master classes focused on blending Japanese tone, structure, and instrumental technique within musical composition. The Clarksburg High School Band premiered the commissioned piece at the National Cherry Blossom Centennial Parade and at the school’s annual spring concert.

LOUDOUN COUNTY

Marilyn Gilligan

Briar Woods High School

Elizabeth the Musical, an original production written, composed, and directed by Briar Woods High School student Greg Mooradian, served as the focus of a year-long study on the Elizabethan era for the school’s Theatre Department. Master Seamstress Joy Heyer conducted master classes on Elizabethan costume design and construction; author, playwright and historian Meredith Bean McMath led workshops on producing and directing historic shows; Andrew Newman taught sword fighting; and Jordon David from Jordan Morris Photography led workshops on the photography and promotion of theatrical productions. Additionally, theatre students toured the Elizabethan Theatre at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Elizabeth the Musical premiered in the fall, and an encore Musical Review of Elizabeth will be presented this spring.

FAIRFAX COUNTY

Claire Rowan

James Madison High School

James Madison High School Choir students created an original a cappella piece based on their reflections of a performance at an Anti-Defamation League event. Through a series of teacher-led discussions on intolerance, hate and discrimination, students formed the text for their original piece before meeting with composer Don McCullough. McCullough, founder of the Virginia Symphony Chorus and Virginia Choral, demonstrated the process of transforming words into harmonic and rhythmic structures. Three additional Fairfax County Public High School choral ensembles will join the James Madison High School Choir in May to perform this original composition at the Vienna Presbyterian Church.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

Michael A. Fitzhugh

Bladensburg High School

The Bladensburg High School Band launched a year-long study on the historical music related to the Battle of Bladensburg. Associate Director of University Bands at Howard University, Kelvin W. Washington, created an arrangement of Bladensburg High School’s Alma Mater that is infused with elements of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. All levels of the student band participated in master classes and workshops led by Washington, as well as participated in side-by-side rehearsals with the Howard University Band. The commissioned piece will be presented to the local community as part of a bicentennial commemoration of the Battle of Bladensburg in the spring.

ARLINGTON COUNTY

Chris Gillespie

Wakefield High School

In preparation for their spring musical Beauty and the Beast, Wakefield Theatre Arts students had an opportunity to work with Washington D.C. area theatre professionals throughout the school year. Students participated in a series of master classes led by multiple guest artists in lighting, sound, set design, and the construction of props and costumes. Additionally, choreographer Jane Franklin, founder of Jane Franklin Dance in Arlington, Virginia, worked with student dancers to guide the choreography of this large musical production.

Sparky Quano releases JENGA

“To see him perform live is an awe-inspiring event.” – Unsigned Magazine

Sparky Quano is far more than a Japanese guitarist – he is a one-man orchestra that layers sound upon sound using only his guitars. While he is prominently known for his electric guitar playing, JENGA (his latest release) is centered mainly around Sparky Quano’s prowess on the acoustic guitar. The musicianship heard from Sparky Quano isn’t something that is found every day. It’s akin to some of the most well-known guitarists from Jeff Beck to Michael Hedges to Kaki King.

On JENGA, Sparky Quano quickly enraptures the listener with his carefully crafted guitar playing that ranges from music that could be used for a lullaby to music that sounds like it’s from another galaxy. “I wanted this music to create a powerful feeling within the listener,” Sparky said. “I wanted it to be as if the listener was hearing the sound of life.” The power is certainly heard on “Mind,” which has a steady hypnotic bass line with other layered acoustic guitar parts to round it out, followed by an electric guitar riff that would make Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth jealous. Quano treats his guitar as a drum on several songs, giving the music a steady back-beat that acts as an anchor for the listener.

When it comes to his music, Sparky Quano truly is a one-man orchestra. Quano wrote, recorded, produced, and mixed JENGA entirely on his own. He simply wants people to “feel free and enjoy” his extraordinary guitar playing.

You can learn more about Sparky and see his latest show dates on his website at sonicbids.com/sparkyquano.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 05, 2012

In preparation for their April auction, Tarisio released their latest video featuring the ‘Baron von der Leyen’ Stradivarius of 1705, a Golden Period Stradivarius that has been in private hands for the past 40 years. Eight talented young musicians were presented with the violin, without being told in advance what they were going to be shown.

Jason Price, Director of Tarisio, said, “We are exceptionally lucky that we are able to help so many musicians find their perfect instruments. Trying great instruments is very important to a developing musical career and watching young players try a Strad is priceless.” Invited were eight of the best young musicians in the country: Jennifer Choi, Bella Hristova, Stefan Jackiw, Nick Kendall, Pauline Kim Harris, Kristin Lee, Asi Matathias and Arnaud Sussmann.

In addition to their experience with the ‘Baron von der Leyen’, each musician was asked to share their story of how they found their violin. Each story is a quick glimpse into the process of a musician in search of their perfect instrument.

The ‘Baron von der Leyen” video is available to view on tarisio.com, with the entire series of videos on Tarisio’s YouTube channel.

The ‘Baron von der Leyen’ violin will be sold at Tarisio’s April auction ending April 26th. Bidding will begin at $ 2,000,000.

Baltimore, Md. (PRWEB) March 30, 2012

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra announces its programming for the Summer 2012 concert season. The season begins with Baltimore’s favorite Fourth of July tradition: The Star-Spangled Spectacular at Oregon Ridge Park (Cockeysville, Md.) on July 3 & 4, featuring favorite patriotic music that culminates in a fireworks display. Also at Oregon Ridge on July 14, the BSO will perform Star Wars and Beyond!, celebrating John Williams’ iconic music that accompanied the popular film franchise and other popular film scores, including Batman and Pirates of the Caribbean. This summer, the BSO returns to Pier Six Pavilion (Baltimore’s Inner Harbor) to perform a musical tribute to Michael Jackson on July 26 and the BSO joins a full rock band to perform the music of Led Zeppelin on July 27. At the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the BSO will perform A Night in Fantasia on July 28, featuring selections from popular video games and anime, with images from the games projected on screens above the orchestra. This concert is produced in collaboration with Baltimore’s annual Otakon Convention, a 3-day festival devoted to Asian pop culture and a destination for more than 25,000 people to Baltimore each summer.

The BSO will also perform as part of Longwood Gardens’ summer line-up on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gardens’ historic Open Air Theatre. Located near Kennett Square, Pa., just outside of the Philadelphia metro region, Longwood is one of the world’s exquisite gardens. It offers more than 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows. The BSO’s program will be led by concertmaster Jonathan Carney and features a full orchestral arrangement of Mendelssohn’s Octet in E flat Major (arranged by Yoon Jae Lee). Also on the program are Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and J.S. Bach’s Second Violin Concerto.

The BSO has also been invited as the resident orchestra for the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition & Festival’s finals on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 8 p.m. Hosted by The University of Maryland at College Park, this week-long festival includes recitals and masterclasses featuring the world’s leading pianists. The festival culminates in a concert featuring the three finalists, performing a concerto with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of David Lockington.

BSO AT OREGON RIDGE PARK

For more than 30 years, the BSO at Oregon Ridge Park has been a Baltimore-area summer tradition, drawing approximately 15,000 patrons annually for family fun, music and fireworks in the wooded enclaves of this Cockeysville park. Gates open at 5 p.m. and local vendors will be onsite selling barbeque and picnic food options. A variety of soft drinks, water, beer and wine will also be available for purchase. Concertgoers are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics for a full evening of entertainment with the BSO. Each concert begins at 8 p.m. and concludes with a fireworks display. Editor’s Note: Glass bottles are not permitted in the Park.

The festivities kick off Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4 at 8 p.m. with the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular, an all-American salute to the nation’s founding. Conductor Robert Franz will lead the BSO and bass-baritone Derrick Parker in a patriotic celebration that includes Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever, among other works, and musical salutes to our armed forces, culminating in a fireworks display. Each concert will begin with the national anthem, led by the winner(s) of the BSO’s fifth annual “Oh, Say Can You Sing?” singing competition. Please see below for complete contest details.

Robert Bernhardt will lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Star Wars and Beyond! on Saturday, July 14 at 8 p.m. Intended for the entire family, Star Wars enthusiasts of all ages can relive the explosive music of one of the biggest film franchises of the 20th century. John Williams’ score to the iconic Star Wars movies as well as music from other popular films such as the Batman and Bond films and classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, will be choreographed to a laser light show and fireworks.

PIER SIX PAVILLION

Located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Pier Six’s covered outdoor venue hosts dozens of famous acts each summer and is a popular destination for tourists and Baltimore locals alike. Within walking distance to hundreds of hotels, museums, attractions and a wide variety of restaurants, all clustered around the Inner Harbor, patrons can make a day of visiting Baltimore’s most famous tourism area, followed by an evening of music with the BSO.

On Thursday, July 26 at 8 p.m., conductor Brent Havens will lead the BSO and tribute artist James Delisco in The Music of Michael Jackson. The combined forces of the Orchestra and an amplified full band and back-up vocal section capture the Michael Jackson’s distinct sound while presenting top hits from the late legend’s influential and celebrated career that spanned nearly 40 years.

On Friday, July 27 at 8 p.m., under the baton of Brent Havens, the BSO, vocalist Randy Jackson and a full rock band will perform The Music of Led Zeppelin: A Rock Symphony, featuring the most famous works of this popular band, including Whole Lotta’ Love, Kashmir, Immigrant Song, Going to California, Stairway to Heaven, Heartbreaker, plus many more. The BSO most recently performed a Led Zeppelin tribute in the summer of 2008, drawing a record attendance of more than 4,000.

OTAKON AT JOSEPH MEYERHOFF SYMPHONY HALL

Baltimore’s primary venue, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, will welcome Otakoners and gaming enthusiasts alike to A Night in Fantasia: The Ultimate Games and Anime Experience on Saturday, July 28 at 4 p.m. Led by conductor Philip Chu, the program will feature selections from some of the greatest video game and anime scores in the world, all arranged specially for the full orchestra, with images projected on screens above the Orchestra.
